Description

Narrowleaf Carpet Grass (Axonopus fissifolius) is a perennial creeping grass that makes a dense turf with shiny leaves.  It is a low profile, low maintenance lawn grass that can perform well in various soil conditions and can be a dominant species in low fertile situations.

Narrowleaf Carpet grass performs very well in the shade and also grows in full sun, making it a very adaptable species suited to areas of the tropics, subtropics and some warmer temperate regions.  Because of its prostrate growth and dense turf, Carpet Grass can be used as a straight lawn seed or in mixtures with other warm-climate grasses for interrow situations, erosion control, and playing fields.

Narrowleaf Carpet Grass is closely related to Broadleaf Carpet Grass (Axonopus compressus).  While its leaf blades are appreciably narrower (50-60%) than those of broadleaf carpetgrass, narrow-leaf carpetgrass is still a coarse-textured species.  

Narrowleaf Carpet Grass is more drought-tolerant and better suited to drier shallower soils than broadleaf carpet grass and is typically the dominant species in low soil fertility turfed areas. Narrowleaf carpet grows best within Queensland and Northern New South Wales. It can also be found growing quite happily growing within moist, well-watered soil, but not waterlogged conditions. 

Narrowleaf carpet grass as a managed turfgrass, forms a moderately dense sward of medium quality turf with a generally shallow root system and is commonly found growing within parks and roadsides that have low soil fertility, has shallow soil and contains a mixture of turf species.  Narrowleaf carpetgrass is a warm-season grass that spreads by means of creeping stolons. It doesn’t produce a high-quality lawn, but it is useful as a turfgrass because it thrives in difficult areas where other grasses fail.

What are the disadvantages of Narrowleaf Carpetgrass:

The disadvantage of using carpetgrass in lawns is its appearance.  It has a pale green or yellowish-green colour and a more sparse growth habit than most turf grasses. It is one of the first grasses to turn brown when temperatures cool and the last to green up in spring.  Carpetgrass sends up seed stalks that quickly grow to a height of about 30cm and bear unattractive seed heads that give the lawn a weedy appearance. To prevent seed heads, mow carpetgrass every five days to a height of 2.5 to 5 cm. If allowed to grow, the seed stalks are tough and hard to mow down.  Narrowleaf Carpet Grass is not considered a high-quality turfgrass and does not produce a fantastic looking lawn, but it can be grown in areas where other grasses fail to grow. Carpet grass is a convenient turfgrass because it is a solution to many problematic lawn areas and is dense enough to withstand pressure.

Despite the disadvantages, there are some situations where carpetgrass excels. Carpetgrass uses include plantings in boggy or shady areas where more desirable grass species won’t grow.
